The Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology is compiling a different kind of sperm bank, one that can hopefully be used to save our coral reefs.

While coral can produce asexually, sexual reproduction is necessary for the corals’ genetic diversity to maintain a sustainable level. That’s why Dr. Mary Hagedorn is constantly adding to her stock of coral embryonic cells and sperm in her one-of-a-kind collection.

At the rate coral reefs are being destroyed or bleached, they will be well on their way to complete destruction by 2050. Hopefully, with the help of Dr. Hagedorn’s work, we can delay or even avoid the incident completely.

Coral Rekindling Venus a film by Lynette Walworth.

Imagine global co-operation for a global problem. Imagine corals as the barometer of climate change. Imagine we are the pivot point. Imagine rekindling Venus.

My intent is to leave the audience with a sense of wonder for the complexity of the coral community and a deep-felt longing to see it survive.

What is apparent when you watch the film is the remarkable survival mechanisms already at play in the community of coral reefs, mechanisms that will be put to the test in the coming years. We might see ourselves as two different communities interconnected in our own survival.

Coral fluorescence by Carlos Villoch

It is not yet fully understood why, some corals, such as those in the Red Sea, are fluorescent when viewed under blue light.

Corals possessing this feature appear to be thriving by comparison to those that do not.  It is possible that this adaptation it is used as a mechanism to filter some of the harmful rays from the sun, which gives the fluorescent corals a greater chance of survival, particularly in warmer waters.
